The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is set to revolutionize diamond grading with its upcoming introduction of cut grades for marquise-, oval-, and pear-shaped diamonds in 2027. This move, long awaited by the industry, addresses the significant variation in cut quality across different diamond shapes, which the GIA currently doesn't recognize in its reports. While round brilliant diamonds can achieve a triple-Ex grade, encompassing excellent cut, polish, and symmetry, other shapes are currently limited to scores for polish and symmetry alone. The GIA's new system will bridge this gap, marking a significant step forward in diamond grading. This development is particularly timely, as demand for fancy-shaped diamonds has surged, with nearly a third of diamonds graded by the GIA in 2022 being fancy-shaped, up from less than a quarter in the previous decade. This shift in consumer preferences underscores the importance of a comprehensive grading system that accounts for the unique characteristics of different diamond shapes. The GIA's initiative is not limited to cut grades alone. The organization is also enhancing its diamond grading reports by adding new comments about fluorescence, a contentious issue in the diamond industry. Fluorescence, which can cause a lower-color diamond to appear more colorless under UV light, has historically been associated with a discount in the trade due to its perceived negative impact on desirability. However, the GIA's research, as detailed in a 2021 paper, clarifies that strong fluorescence does not cause haziness but can exacerbate it. The new comments will focus on the neutral-to-positive effect of fluorescence on diamond appearance, particularly in daylight-equivalent environments, and will not address the connection between fluorescence and color grade. This nuanced approach to fluorescence grading is a significant step towards a more accurate and comprehensive understanding of diamond quality, ensuring that consumers receive the most informed and reliable information possible.
